WHAT: Students and staff at Colorado State University have collaborated on a campaign, "Kids for a Cause," to tackle a problem with cigarette butt litter and smoke-free boundary infringement at the Gifford building on campus near the Early Childhood Center children's playground. The launch of the campaign will include children painting an outline for the smoke-free zone around the playground with imprints of their hands and the unveiling of smoke-free signs designed in a contest of students in the Department of Design and Merchandising in the College of Applied Human Sciences. - Monday, May 05, 2008

In case you missed it, April was Financial Literacy Month. Concerned officials hope that by designating a month to this topic, they can direct attention to a potentially large educational deficiency. Recent scores on a test sponsored by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy paint a fairly dismal picture. The number of natural disasters recorded globally has increased fourfold during the past three decades, growing from fewer than 100 in 1975 to more than 400 in 2005. Colorado State University researcher Lori Peek is guest editor of the new issue of the journal, "Children, Youth and Environments," which explores the vulnerability and resilience of children in natural disasters.
